Just Let your SOUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Glow… Sboys the take over!

A true Gem in the city! Soul Boys (Sboys for short) are more than just a screen printing company, they are young men following their dreams as well as assisting others on their own journey.

When I first had the idea to interview Sboys, it was because they were beyond creative with their screen printing. Little did I know there was so much more to these guys than just shirts and jackets. Soul boys was established in 1997. The business was left to the Dave and his brothers by their father. The business started off as just a Rest In Peace shirt shop. Dave and his brothers (Davon and Davonte) decided to get creative and think outside the box. What sets them apart from any other Screen printing business is that they sit down with their customers and go over and beyond with concepts and ideas. The customers idea is customized to them, it’s no rush job, they makes sure their customers are satisfied.

“We listen to the youth, we don’t just listen to the customers we sit and talk to people”.

Every time I have stepped in the shop its been flooded with customers. One of their customer described the Sboys as “good dudes, that back up what they say” Their walls are covered with celebrity endorsements, Shirt ideas from clients, and tributes all the friends, family, and clients that they have lost. The lobby has a huge flat screen and X-Box with somebody always on sticks or watching sports.

For anyone trying to start your own business or brand yourself Dave’s advice is Pray, and really want to do it . You have to be humble, ambitious and your mind-set on what you want. You have to have patience, there will be a lot of trials and tribulations, you just have to stay focused.

When asked What do you think about the turmoil Detroit is in? How can we fix it?

Dave’s answer was, Detroit as a people need to come together, we as a people are so divided and distance from one another. Detroit as community has so much hatred towards one another.
Dave’s belief is to work with youth to change their mindset and stop the violence. Dave is extremely passionate about uplifting the youth and less fortunate of Detroit.

So how does Sboys plan to give back to the city? Sboys have started feeding the homeless and less fortunate as well as a mentoring program from inner city young men. Sboys hope to make the feed the less fortunate a bi-weekly event.

What made them a true Gem is that this business gives back to the city that patronizes them. It was a breath of fresh air to see young men who are empathetic to the social problems around them that they became a solution to problems.

Whats next for Sboys?

The Sboys are now venturing into expanding the printing company to Atlanta, Georgia as well as starting a Record Label BMB (The initials of their uncle). They also are launching their own clothing line Enjoy Detroit!

Fatboyz Heavy in The D

Part of the inspiration for my blog was the Restaurant FATBOYZ. I experienced their smothered turkey chops (don’t do the swine) and immediately feel in love.

I had the opportunity to interview with the manager of the restaurant Carlos Smith. The restaurant was founded by Fatboy (what his friends and family called him) in 2006 on the westside of Detroit. Fatboy passed away and left the restaurant to his children and family. Carlos described the restaurant’s style as a cross between Coney Island and a Mom and Pops restaurant. Fatboyz offer a variety of meals from comfort foods to everyday on the go dishes. The restaurant is known for their secret recipe homemade Alfredo sauce that is used on a few of the dishes they serve. Their most popular dishes are their Chicken alfredo bake potato, porterhouse steak, and the turkey ribs. While at the restaurant I had the privilege to experience the chicken Alfredo for myself. This huge potato was covered with grilled chicken chunks, sautéed onions, mushrooms, broccoli, and engulfed in Alfredo sauce and a 4 cheese blend. I literally got through a corner of the potato, tapped out and needed a good nap.

Next on my list to try is the turkey ribs. I can only imagine what those will taste like seeing their smothered turkey chops were AMAZING.

Carlos’ advice to anyone trying to brand their selves and start their own business is to “Map out your plan and stick to it. Look past your doubts you won’t know what you can do until you try.” Carlos believes that the turmoil that Detroit is facing has a lot to do with the leaders we have in office and the upbringing of the youth in the community. “The best we can do as community is learn to support one another and raise our youth better”. When asked how will Fatboyz give back to the community, Carlos stated he can’t speak for the business in that aspect but Fatboyz does give discounts to their instagram followers (instagram name is @fatboyzDetroit).

So what is next for Fatboyz?? Fatboyz is currently in the process of opening another restaurant on eastside of Detroit as well as opening up a food truck that can be spotted in various places depending on the whats going on in the city!!!! Fatboyz has a welcoming staff that treats everyone like family and food that leaves you full and satisfied! This spot is officially Buzzing (My stamp of approval) I encourage you to try them, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Welcome to the Buzz!!! Hunie’s Buzz

So I’m on the net shopping (what I do) and I’m see a few clothing lines from fellow Detroiters and I’m thinking this ish is Dope! I get hungry and I go grab a bite at this local restaurant and fell in love. I get home and my mind started to wonder… Everyone has this negative outlook on the city of Detroit, when in all honesty we are full of hustlers and grinders producing great product and services. Even the natives of Detroit are quick to run to the suburbs and patronize multi- million dollar companies instead of supporting their very own. Then it hit me, I should start a blog exposing what WE have to offer. There are so many positive people in Detroit trying to live out their dreams and have no exposure or support…. So here is my tribute to the Movers and Shakers of Detroit. This blog is dedicated to giving recognition and exposure to the Natives of Detroit who put on for the city as well as educating the world on what’s surrounding our city and how WE can improve. We can’t expect people to take pride in us if we don’t have pride in ourselves. So with much excitement and anticipation welcome to Hunie’s Buzz.
